I think it might be winter

Actually I’m sure it is winter, you know why I’m sure? Because there is snow EVERYWHERE that is how.

When we first arrived in Vancouver, we were told it hardly ever snows in the city – maybe a couple of days a year. Last year I think there were around 6 to 8 days where the snow settled on the ground and it turned everything white for no more than 2 days at a time, we found it pretty exciting but a lot of our friends coming from eastern Canada said it wasn’t really winter and that we were all quite lame for getting excited about it.

We this year is different. We had lunch with some of those eastern Canadian friends today and they said it feels like Ontario more than BC. Apparently this is the coldest streak of weather since some time in the 1940’s, it has been over a week since the temperature gauge has hit positive numbers and there has been 3 good dumps of snow this week – the first was 5 – 10cm, the second around 15cm and the third which is today is at least 15cm and still falling.

This is what it looks like from our place right now. (The stairs were shoveled clean twice already today.)

a few shots around church last week (Yes our church is in the middle of a forest….serious, it is):

And a couple more from outside our place right now:

And one more from last week of us at the Fraser River lookout, there were little piles of snow on all those posts in the background:

It has been a very distracting week and quite surreal to look outside every time and see large amounts of snow on the ground. It has been a good time to learn more about driving in the snow – I even had a little play in the church car park after practice on Wednesday to get used to skidding around in it.

I really like it when it snows, everything goes so quiet. the cars drive so slow that you can’t really hear traffic, people outside aren’t really running or yelling, they just stroll, and the snow itself doesn’t make a sound it just gently drifts down and floats around so beautiful.

I think I could probably enjoy living in a place that had snow permanently on the ground for a few months, but I guess then everyone just gets used to it and doesn’t enjoy it as much as most people around here are right now. It’s weird, because the snow really is a big inconvenience, but like me most people just enjoy seeing it so much that they don’t care.

Yep, winter is here, and I like it!
